Fine line black script tattoo reading fearless on the side of a woman's neck.

Fearless script on the side of the neck

Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo

A close side view of a neck showing the word fearless with a full stop, written in a thin, continuous script. The linework is single-weight and solid black, with no shading. The plain pale background keeps the small tattoo as the clear focus.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You are fourteen, and the lie about your age sits on your tongue like coal dust you cannot spit out. The cage drops at Hollin Pit with a lurch that goes straight up through your boots, and Arthur Lusk, who has known your father since they were barefoot boys on the same cinder path, takes your elbow and says nothing. He does not need to. The whole village already knows what you are doing, and nobody has stopped you.

Your mother did not come to the head gear. She stayed at the sink with her back to the window, and before you left she pressed a folded scrap into your palm, torn from the back of the Co-op ledger. On it, in her quick, slanted hand that loops and never lifts, she had written one word and a full stop: fearless. You read it on the platform by the light of your helmet lamp, then folded it into your sock where the dust could not reach it.

The roadway is so low you crawl for the first two hundred yards. Water drips ahead in a steady count. When the face opens out and the picks start up, your hands are shaking, and you grip the shovel until they stop. Arthur taps your shoulder twice. Eleven hours later, when the cage carries you back to daylight, you realise you have been thinking of the word in your sock rather than the roof above you, and that is the trick of it, the way a single unbroken line can hold a weight.

At the sink your mother does not turn round. She sees your reflection in the black window and nods once. You take the scrap from your sock and smooth it flat on the drainer. Beneath the word she has pressed so hard the pen has nearly gone through the paper, and she has added nothing more, because nothing more was needed.
