Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photo of the word always written in thin, flowing black script with a small full stop after it. The linework is even and delicate, with no shading, and the ink sits on pale skin beneath a pushed-up grey sleeve. The word sits centrally across the frame against a plain background.

Mrs Lidgate came in on a wet Tuesday with the form already filled. Her son was on a collier out of Hull and the ship was overdue. She had written a long message, crossed most of it out, and left only one word at the bottom, pressed so hard the pencil had torn the paper.

The reply came three days later, rattling through the sounder. I copied it onto the blue form with my hand not quite steady. Ship sighted off Spurn. Home Friday. And at the end, one word more than anyone had paid for, because the operator at the far end had decided it was owed to her.
Always.
