The rain had got under the awning again, so the gold leaf on the board kept lifting before I could lay the last letter. Tom stood behind me with his tea going cold on the bench and told me the loops had to float, that my hand should move like it was writing on water and not like it was scared of the wood. I had been at the stall three weeks. I still held the brush like a pen.

When I hung it, the wet had darkened the wood and the letters stood out black and even above the doorframe. She looked up at it for a long time, and then she nodded once and went inside without paying, which Tom said was the best sign of all.
