ALWAYS lettering on the wrist
Lettering · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
The image shows the word ALWAYS in black capitals with a classic serif typeface, set slightly angled across the inner wrist. A thin black vertical line cuts through the left letter A, and a small red smudge sits below the left side of the word. The background is plain and pale, so the lettering and the red accent stand out clearly.

Dear Hal, The snow has shut the Keswick road since Tuesday, so the post-boy sleeps in our back parlour with his boots steaming on the fender, and I have time to tell you about the letter I found under the settle. It had slid behind the cushion where the coach passengers stuff their gloves, the wax seal cracked clean across, a smear of red gone brown at one edge as if it had been dragged through the wet.

I should not have read it, but the direction was smudged and I could not tell whose it was meant for, so I opened it at the kitchen table with the kettle going. It was a woman's hand, careful and a little cramped, writing to a man who had gone south to the salt works. She wrote about the price of tallow and the lambing and the bell at St Anne's that had cracked. At the foot of the last page she had written one word in capitals and then struck a line through the first letter, as though she had changed her mind about how to begin, and then she had written it again, ALWAYS, and pressed so hard the nib had torn the paper.
Mother came in while I was sitting over it and said, read the rest, Nell, you have started now. I told her there was no rest, only that word. She took the page, looked at it a long while, and said the carrier would take it on Thursday if the drifts allowed. So I have sealed it again with a dab of our own red wax, and I have put it in the mailbag with the others, and I have not told the post-boy what it says.
Write back soon. Tell me the salt works are not as bad as the letters say.
Your sister, Nell
