Always script tattoo on a finger

Lettering · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of the word Always in black cursive script across the side of a finger. The linework is smooth and of even weight, with the capital A looped and the letters joined in a flowing hand. The ink is solid black against pale skin, and the dark, out-of-focus background keeps the attention on the lettering.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The snow came early to the Col de Varra that November, and by the third week the mule track was a white seam nobody wanted to walk. I walked it anyway, with the post strapped across Dolly's back and my scarf frozen stiff at the mouth. Thirty-eight letters for Saint-Ours, mostly bills and seed catalogues, and one small blue envelope written in pencil, addressed to Monsieur Tomas Ferrand, care of the chapel.

Tomas had been buried in the spring before I took over the round. Every autumn since, his wife had written to him, and every letter ended with the same word, underlined twice: Toujours, C. The priest at Saint-Ours had stopped opening them. The postmaster in the valley said to keep delivering anyway, because the chapel box was the only address the old woman still trusted.

At the top of the pass the wind dropped, and I saw a figure on the chapel step, wrapped in a grey shawl, sitting as though she had been waiting since morning. Clemence Ferrand was smaller than her handwriting. She turned the envelope over in her gloved hands and did not open it. "Forty years he never once wrote back," she said. "So I kept writing, and that was my answer to him."

She held out the pencil stub she kept in her pocket. I wrote my name on the back of the envelope, then, because she asked me to, I wrote the word beneath it in my own careful hand, the way she always did. The mule knew the road down without being asked, and I did not look back at the chapel until we were below the tree line.
