Always lettering with birds and Deathly Hallows
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A black ink tattoo reads Always in flowing lettering, with a triangle, circle and vertical line symbol at the start of the word. Three small outlined birds sit above and to the right of the word, with one bird slightly higher, and the thin, even linework is set against smooth skin in a close crop.

Nell had painted the same word on every caravan the Marrow brothers owned, and by the spring of their fourth county she could do it without looking. Always, in a loose hand that leaned into the wind, the L looping like a fishing line. Her uncle Tobias said customers liked a word that promised something. Nobody on the fair ever asked what it promised.

The trouble started at Cheltenham, when the tin ducks in the shooting gallery went missing and the crows took to sitting on the big top's guy ropes in rows, watching the ticket booth. Nell climbed the ladder with a pot of black enamel and a brush no wider than a hair. Beneath the word she drew the three-cornered sign the old knife-thrower in Hereford had shown her, a triangle with a circle set inside and a single stroke running down from its base like a dropped plumb line. Tobias said it looked like a map. Nell said it was a thing you could keep in your pocket and not lose.
That night the crows lifted off the ropes in a loose wedge and went south over the car park, three of them, the last one flying a little higher than the others as if it had somewhere more urgent to be. Nell watched from the step of the caravan until they were gone.
In the morning every tin duck was back on its hook, painted and rattling in the breeze, and Tobias stood in the wet grass with his cap in his hands. He didn't ask where they had been. He only nodded at the caravan door and said the paint was still tacky, so she should mind her sleeves.
