Black script tattoo reading Always, with light blue and pink watercolour splashes, on the inner wrist and forearm.

Always script tattoo on the wrist

Lettering · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo spells the word Always in a flowing black script with smooth, connected strokes and a bold, slightly slanted lettering style. Soft blue and pink watercolour splashes sit behind the left and right ends of the word, adding colour without covering the letters. The photo is taken close up on pale skin, with the lettering centred across the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The ink on the Carrow Island post office stamp was never quite black, and Mrs Hesketh said that was the sea's doing. Every letter that left the harbour on the Thursday packet was pressed with the same brass die, a word in looping script that read ALWAYS, and every clerk who inked it swore the blue and the pink came off the water and not the pad.

Tomas inherited the die from his aunt, along with a debt to the harbourmaster and a habit of talking to the gulls. He tried to stamp the letters clean, but the damp rose through the sorting floor each spring and bled colour into the margins. A sweetheart's letter to a fisherman came out with a pink haze over the back half of the word, and a widow's notice to the bank came out with a cold blue wash at the front.

In the autumn of the great gale, a parcel arrived addressed to nobody on the island, only to the lighthouse. Inside was a single sheet with the stamp pressed on it and no words beside it. Tomas held it to the window. The colours had run exactly to the edges of the letters, neither spilling over nor pulling back, as if the word had been holding its ground for years.

He carried it up the cliff path himself on the next calm morning, and when the keeper's boy came down with a reply, it was folded around a pressed sea-pink petal. Tomas kept the die in the drawer after that, and only stamped the letters he meant to be read twice.
