The storm came over Scarth in the third week of Lent, and by the time the bell rope parted, Brother Osric was already halfway up the tower stair with a lantern in his teeth. The bolt had struck the belfry and left the stone smelling of scorched wool. On the flags where the tower met the cloister lay a small iron fitting no longer than his thumb: a three-cornered frame, a ring set inside it, and a single bar running down from the base like a dropped plumb line. It was too hot to hold without a rag.

Prior Hedda turned it over in the refectory and said nothing for a long time. The valley people had been lost in cloud for three days and had stopped answering the bell. 'Mend the rope,' she said at last. 'Mend it with the iron.' Osric bound the fitting to the rope end with copper wire, and the work kept him until the candles were stubs. He asked what the mark meant. She said the old abbots had carved the same shape over the south door, and nobody living remembered why.

When he rang the bell that night, the sound went out through the cloud, low and then bright, and far down the valley a lamp answered. He kept ringing through the dark, one stroke for every breath, and each time he drew breath he said the word the prior had taught him to end the vows with. The lamps came up the path one by one, a thin line of small lights climbing toward the gate.

By morning the cloud had lifted, Osric's palms were blistered raw, and the iron had cooled to the colour of ash. The prior hung it on a nail beside the bell wheel, where it still hangs. Every novice who learns the rope is shown the bar, the ring and the three corners, and told to ring until the last lamp is through the gate.
