The bell at Saint Ebba's had cracked the winter the apothecary died, so when the rector's boy came running up the lane with word that Tom Fenner had dropped in his marrow patch, Agnes Hale took her brass listening tube from its nail and went without her shawl.

Tom lay between the rows with his eyes open and his lips gone the colour of slate. Agnes knelt in the wet earth, set the bell of the tube over his chest and listened the way her grandmother had taught her, with her eyes shut and her mind on nothing else. The beat was there, but it stumbled, then ran, then stumbled again, like a cart wheel missing a spoke in every turn.

She went home for the foxgloves. Out past the privy, where the old physic garden had gone to seed, the purple spires stood taller than a child. She cut three leaves, dried them over the range, and crushed them into a spoonful of honey. Tom swallowed it, grumbled that it tasted of the bottom of a pond, and by dusk his fingers had pinked again. Nobody asked how she knew which leaf to pick, or why the foxgloves in that garden had always leaned towards her gate.

Agnes hung the tube back on its nail that night and sat a while in the dark listening to her own heart, steady as a clock in a cold house. Outside, the foxgloves ticked in the wind, and she thought she heard them keeping time.
