Stethoscope and heart on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A single-needle style outline of a stethoscope sits on the forearm, with its tubing looping into a heart shape at the lower right. The linework is thin and even, with the chest piece and earpiece shown as small filled circles. The tattoo is in black ink only, set against plain skin and a dark backdrop.

Nell found the stethoscope on the nail behind the door of the potting shed, where it had hung since the surgery closed. The rubber had gone stiff and faintly yellow, and the tubing curled over itself the way her grandfather always left it, in a loose loop that never quite lay flat. She lifted it down with two fingers. Dust came away in a grey film on her palm.

He had used it on the garden as much as on people. Every spring he pressed the chest piece to the warm flank of the compost heap, closed his eyes and held still, then told her that a heap with a good heartbeat would give them tomatoes that didn't split. She thought it was a joke for years. Standing in the wet March light, with bindweed already threading through the fence panels, she was less sure what counted as a joke.
She carried it out and knelt beside the heap. The steel was cold against her ear, then the compost began to speak: a faint, busy ticking, like a kitchen clock in another room, and under it a deeper warmth she could feel through her knuckles. Something in there was working hard and not caring who listened. She stayed until her knees ached.
Afterwards she didn't hang it straight back on the nail. She let the tubing fall into its old loop, the one that made a heart shape against the wall, and left it exactly as he would have, then went to find the spade.
