A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The tide had turned twice before Mags Corrigan agreed to take the rope off the quay. Her brother Declan had tied it to the iron ring himself the spring the Sorcha Rose went down off Mizen Head, and nobody on Haulbowline Road had ever seen it come loose. It was tan and frayed at one end, and when she pulled, it did not want to give. She sat on the bollard with her boots wet and told the gulls it was her house now and they could mind their business.

But the knot was a good one, the kind a man ties when he means to be found by it. Mags worked it with her thumbnail for an hour while the harbour lights came on one by one across the water. Halfway through she found a scrap of card folded into the loop, soft as cloth, with a pencilled line in Declan's square hand: be strong, believe. Under it he had drawn a figure of eight lying on its side, and a small anchor sitting at the crossing, like a man who had stopped to rest at the midpoint.

She laughed, then she didn't. Her hands were cold enough that the knot finally eased. She coiled the rope over her shoulder, left the anchor where it was for the next boat to find, and walked home along the wall with the card tucked inside her coat, the way a sailor carries a thing he means to show someone at the far end of the voyage.
