Infinity symbol flash sheet with six designs

Geometric · Black and grey · Flash

A flash sheet showing six infinity symbol designs on a white background. Each infinity loop carries a different motif: a feather, a rose with stem, two birds in flight, music notes, three small hearts, and a triple interlocked infinity. The linework is black and bold, with some shading on the feather and rose, and the designs are spaced evenly across the sheet.

The lost property cupboard at Hollinbridge held forty-one umbrellas that Tuesday, a tin of loose keys, and a flash sheet my brother Dennis had left on the counter the week before he went south. Six infinity signs in black ink, each one carrying something different: a feather, a rose on a bent stem, two swallows, a run of quavers, three small hearts, and a set of loops hooked through each other like links in a chain. Nobody claimed it, so I pinned it above the kettle in the ticket office and watched the 5.40 to Leeds shake the glass roof.

On Thursday a woman in a green anorak came to the window asking whether anyone had handed in a drawing. She didn't need to say what kind. She looked at the wall where the sheet hung, and her eyes went straight to the swallows, as if they had been waiting for someone to notice them. Dennis had drawn the whole sheet in one evening at my kitchen table, saying a loop never ends if you keep going round it. I told her the sheet was not mine to give away. She said she knew that. She only wanted to see the birds once more before her train.

I took it down, folded it along the crease where the loops met, and put it in her hand. She thanked me and walked out through the barrier with the paper held flat against her coat, the way you carry something that might still be wet.

I stood with the empty pin in my fingers, tracing a slow eight in the air above the counter, until the next train came in and the platform filled and emptied again.
