Anchor and infinity script tattoo
Fine line · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
The collage shows a black anchor with an infinity loop above it, with the words live and life written in thin script along the loop. The top panel is a clean line drawing on white, the lower left shows two printed sheets of the design on grass, and the lower right shows the design on a person's thigh. The linework is fine and uniform, with solid black ink and no shading or colour.

The ewes were down off the top field before the frost had lifted, and Dad came in with his cap crusted white and dropped the feed sack on the kitchen flags without a word. That meant the lambing shed would be a long night, and neither of us was going to pretend otherwise.

Grandad used to say a farm and a ship want the same thing from you: something solid to hold when the weather turns. Years ago he drew an anchor on the back of the feed ledger, a black hook with a loop of ink curling above it, and wrote the two words he argued over with Gran for forty years, live and life, as though only one of them could be right. Gran always said he had argued himself into that loop and never managed to get out.
By midnight the wind was pushing at the tin roof and the shed smelled of wet straw and iodine. The ewe in pen four had been straining for an hour, and when the first hoof showed, Dad pushed his sleeves up and held out his hand for the towel. I held the lamb's head while he worked the rest free, and it came slippery and grey into the lamp light, not moving, and my throat closed the way it had when I was nine.
Then Dad rubbed it hard with straw, once, twice, and it sneezed. We stayed kneeling in the muck until it stood on legs like knitting needles. At dawn I took the ledger down from its nail and turned to Grandad's drawing. Beneath the anchor, in my own pencil, I wrote one ewe, one lamb, and beside them the only word I was sure of: live.
