Anchor and script infinity tattoo on side
Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A small black fine line anchor sits on the side of the body, with its rope rising into a looping script that reads life and love. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the ink is solid black against pale skin. A hand holding a ring rests at the top of the frame, and the tattoo is placed in the lower left of the image.

Tamsin Pardew buried her husband's anchor under the runner beans the winter the boats stopped coming in. The harbour master had said it was too heavy to keep and too good to sell for scrap, so she wheeled it up the cliff path on a barrow, one rutted yard at a time, and dug it in where the sun lay longest. Her neighbours thought her soft in the head. She did not argue. She only asked the lad from the chandlery for a length of old manila, and he gave her forty fathoms for the price of a pie.

She tied one end to the shank and ran the rest up over the garden wall, along the gutter of the cottage and through the crook of the apple tree. Every morning she went out with her tea and pulled the rope a little tighter, and every evening it had shifted, the way rope does in damp weather, until by midsummer the loose end hung in a loop above the gate, twisted into shapes she had not planned. The rain softened the hemp. Moss found the gaps between the strands and held on.
In August a stranger came up the lane asking for work on the sea wall, and stopped at the gate to read the loop. Life, he said, pointing, and then, lower, love, as though the rope had said it to him first. Tamsin let him in for tea. He stayed eleven years and mended the wall, and the rope never once needed tightening again.
