Black ink anchor with birds lifting off its shank and the script Sorelle per Sempre below it, tattooed on a lower leg.

Anchor with birds and script on a calf

Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A black anchor sits on the lower leg with a cluster of small bird silhouettes rising from its shank toward the top right. Curved script beneath the anchor reads Sorelle per Sempre, and the outlines and solid fills are crisp and bold. The ink is uniformly black on pale skin, with the design centred on the leg against dark clothing.

The Vesper Ruth had been tied up at Pellow's Quay three days waiting on the weather, and Nell Carrow had spent every one of them mending nets on the slipway with her sister's old knife. Maren came down the steps at dusk with two mugs of tea gone cold and sat on the upturned crab pot beside her without asking.

The gulls were already lifting off the harbour wall, a loose grey crowd that broke apart over the masts and rose higher than either of them could follow. Maren pointed with her chin. Her father had told them, when they were small, that a bird going up from a boat meant the water was still deep enough to trust. Nell had never believed him, and had never once stopped looking.

In the morning the wind dropped and the Ruth went out past the breakwater with Maren at the tiller, because Maren was the one who could read the swell. Nell watched from the quay until the hull was a fleck, then a nothing. Her hands went on working the twine without her.

They came back on the Thursday with the hold full and one oar snapped at the loom. Maren stepped onto the stones and held out a folded scrap of oilcloth. Inside, in her sister's careless capitals, someone had scratched a line from the old prayer book they kept in the wheelhouse. Nell read it twice, then laughed until she had to sit down on the crab pot, and the gulls came back down to the wall as if they had never left.
