Clasped hands with finger tattoos

Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A black and white photograph of two hands clasped together in front of a dark suit and white shirt. Small dark linework tattoos are visible across the fingers and the back of the hand, and a metal wristwatch sits on the left wrist. The lighting is low and dramatic, with the hands lit in the centre of the frame and the rest of the image falling into shadow.

The harbour at Scarrow kept its time by the window of Pollard's shop. When the boats went out before dawn, the men left their watches on Ada's counter to be cleaned, and she kept them safe until the fleet came back past the breakwater.

In the winter of the big gale, the Serrin watch came back to her with a hairline crack across the glass and no Serrin to collect it. Ada did not open the case. She laid it on a square of green baize, drew the cover over it, and sat with her hands knotted in her lap while the tide turned and turned again. Every hour she wound the stem a quarter turn, though nothing about it needed winding.

The Maud Rose came round the point at slack water on the third morning, riding low, with two men aboard where there should have been three. Tom Serrin climbed onto the quay with a coil of wet rope over his shoulder and asked her for his watch. He told her his brother had gone over the side with the nets, and that the watch had stopped at the very minute it happened. Ada already knew the minute. She had heard the tick falter in her sleep.

She gave it back running. Tom held it to his ear, nodded once, and walked up the hill without a word. Ada turned the shop sign to closed and kept the second hand going for the rest of the day, a small steady sound in an empty room, and it was the only thing she could do for anyone that winter.
