A small black anchor with a heart-shaped ring at the top sits above a curved line of script reading Hebrews 6:19. The anchor has solid, bold linework and the script is smooth and cursive, both in a single dark ink tone. The tattoo is shown close up against warm, freckled skin with a soft focus and a dark strap at the left edge.

Her brother Danny had gone down with a tin anchor on a bootlace round his neck. Mr Haig the smith had hammered them out of old boiler plate that winter, one for every man on the north face, the shank cut so a heart curled through the eye and showed when the lamp caught it. She listened now, to the rope creaking, to the men at the windlass humming "Abide with Me" under their breath because it was the one hymn they all knew by heart.

The cage came up at ten past four with two men on it, one of them carried. Danny was black to the eyebrows and grinning, the bootlace still knotted at his neck, the tin anchor warm from his skin. He pressed it into her hand. "Held fast," he said, and she laughed until she was crying.
