Anchor with rope and text on a wrist
Other · Black and grey · Photo
A small anchor with a rope wrapped around its shank is drawn in a single black outline with no shading. Below it, the words Hebrews 6:19 are written in a hand-lettered black script, centred under the anchor. The photograph is taken straight on, with the tattoo sitting in the middle of the frame against pale skin.

The rope was already wound round the shank when you reached Skerry Hollow, and Old Ness didn't look up from it. He told you the knot was a rolling hitch, the kind that holds when everything else is sliding, and that the boatmen had tied it since before the pier was built. You had come over on the Tuesday mail boat with one canvas bag and a letter from your aunt saying there was work at the slipway. The work was mostly scraping weed off hulls and hauling creels up the shingle, and you were glad of it.

The winter the Marion Rae dragged her moorings, you went down the slip in black water to the waist with a lamp hooked on your collar. Ness stayed on the stones shouting the bearings, his voice thin in the wind. You got the chain on the new ring before the tide turned, and when you came up the shingle your hands wouldn't close properly for an hour.
Afterwards he pinned a scrap of paper to the chapel board, copied out in his square capitals: Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast. He said it was from the letter to the Hebrews and that he had never understood the bit about the soul, only the bit about sure and steadfast, which was all a man needed of a mooring.
The next spring you tied the rolling hitch yourself on a fresh length of hemp, and Ness checked it twice without a word. When the mail boat's horn sounded across the sound, you lifted the coil onto your shoulder and walked down to the Marion Rae, where the rope went taut and stayed taut all the way out.
