The apples you sent on the Tuesday tide went green at the core before we reached Gravesend, so Cook has been slicing them for the galley and swearing at the bruises. I kept the last one back. It sits on the shelf above my bunk, next to the tin of rope-ends I keep meaning to splice into something useful.

We lost the chain off Harwich in the blow. Not the anchor, the chain, which the mate says is worse, because the anchor is only iron and the chain is a month's wages. I went down to the locker after the spare and found the length of old hemp you wound round the shackle for me last spring, the one with the red thread through it. I had forgotten it was there. I stood in the dark with the lamp swinging and thought of your hands doing that knot, slow, because you said a knot made in a hurry is a promise you cannot keep.

We are back in Ipswich by Friday if the wind holds. Tell your brother the cider barrels are not to be tipped on the quay again, and tell your father I have not been drinking his share. Pick me a bucket of the late Bramleys if they are still on the tree. I will carry the rest up the lane myself.
