Two arrows across the upper chest
Fine line · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A close crop of a person wearing a loose blue top with a draped neckline, with long dark hair falling over one shoulder. Two thin black arrows, one with a fletched tail and a barbed head, sit parallel across the skin of the upper chest. The linework is crisp and the ink is solid black with no visible colour, against a warm skin tone and a blue fabric background.

Snow had sealed the pass for nine days when Hanne found the two arrows in the woodpile behind the stable. They lay side by side, shafts parallel, as though someone had laid them down with care. Both had grey goose fletching and barbed heads that caught the lantern light like fish hooks.

Her father, Osric, took them from her without looking and turned them over in his big hands. "Miller's boys," he said. "They went up the ridge after the white stag three days back and never came down." He said it plainly, the way he said the price of oats and the depth of the drifts. Then he put the arrows on the high shelf above the hearth, where the guests' keepsakes gathered dust.
That night the wind dropped and a knock came at the door. Two men stood on the step, shoulders white with snow, faces raw with cold. Tobin and Aldous Miller, alive and furious. They had both loosed at the stag in the same instant, they said, and the beast had gone down between their arrows, and neither would admit whose had struck true. They had argued on the ridge ever since, and the snow had kept them there.
Osric said nothing. He fetched two bowls of broth and set them on the table, the same distance from the fire. The brothers ate in silence, and by morning they had agreed on a split of the meat. The arrows stayed on the shelf, and when the pass opened, Hanne noticed that the two shafts had been laid so their barbs now touched, as if neither brother had been willing to let go first.
