Small fish outline tattoo on a finger

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A close-up photograph of a hand resting against a pale textured wall, showing a small fish outline tattooed on the side of one finger. The linework is thin and single-coloured in a dark ink that looks teal or near black, with no shading. A silver ring set with a blue cabochon stone sits on another finger, and the soft, slightly grainy lighting keeps the background muted.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mara Tallis swept the sawdust from the Pavilion floor twice before the last waltz, because her son Owen had come in off the Morag with a wet coat and a question he would not say aloud. Gil Parry tuned his fiddle in the corner and kept one eye on the door, as he had done for forty years, since the night the Sound boy came.

Everyone in Skerrow knew that story. A girl had danced with a stranger in the hall, and in the morning the tide had left a small fish scratched in the wet sand beside her step, a single curved stroke with a tail at one end. Her father called it a bargain, and so the village began marking its doors, its net floats and its boats with the same shape, a fish drawn in one line so the sea could not cut it short.

Owen stood up when the door opened. The stranger was no taller than him and no wetter, only quieter, and he held out a silver ring set with a blue stone the colour of deep water. "For the dance," he said. "Same as the last one." Owen laughed, but nobody else did.

Gil lifted his bow and played the old waltz, the one with the turn in its third bar that always went wrong. Owen took the ring, and the stranger took Mara's hand, and they went round the sawdust while the lamps guttered. When the tune ended, the floor held one fish drawn in boot-heel dust, the ring was warm in Owen's palm, and the door stood open on the grey water that had already begun to turn.
