Heart and musical note ankle tattoo

Ankle · Mixed · Photo

Two photographs show the same small tattoo on an ankle, one on a lighter skin tone and one on a darker tone. A bold black ornamental figure resembling a musical note or treble-like flourish sits with two pink hearts, one larger and one smaller, and a few fine swirls beside it. The black ink is solid with clean edges, the hearts are flat pink, and the composition sits centrally on the ankle bone against a plain background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Every spring the herring came in past the Skerry, and every spring old Ailsa Brodie walked down to the slipway with her fiddle under her arm, because her father had told her the fish could not find the bay without a tune to follow.

Nobody believed it except the boats that had nothing else to go on. The men of Stroma Bay laughed at her, then went out in the dark when she played, and came back with their nets straining. She never asked for a share. She sat on an upturned coble and played the same slow air over and over, with a pinch of salt in her shoe for luck and a black thread knotted through the bow.

One year the sea went quiet. The boats came home empty three days running and the children began to fret. On the fourth evening a young deckhand named Tam Gow came up the slipway shouting that the water was boiling with silver a mile out, but no one could reach it, because the wind had turned and the tide was running the wrong way. Ailsa tucked the fiddle under her chin and played, and the curls of her bowing ran out over the water like ribbon unspooling from a reel.

The fish came in on the turn, as they always did. Ailsa never said who had taught her the tune. The old men say her father sang it to the herring when he was a boy, and that the two hearts scratched in the slipway tar, one large and one small, are still there for anyone who looks.
