The Harrowgate Marvel had shrunk to three wagons and a lame pony by the autumn the ringmaster's daughter began to draw in the dust. Her name was Nan Ostle, and every night after the last turn she drew with a stick, always the same shape: a loop that crossed itself in the middle, lying on its side and going on for ever.

"Why do you never finish it?" asked the clown, who was sweeping sawdust into a pile that would blow away by morning.

"Because it doesn't finish," said Nan. "That's the trick of it. You put your foot on the crossing and you can go round either way and come back to where you started, and nobody has to say goodbye."

The clown laughed, but he watched her. The company had travelled the same figure of roads for eleven years, north to the coast fair, back down through the mill towns, and round again, because the bookings had dwindled to nothing else. Nobody had the heart to say the loop had become a rut.

Then one wet morning the wagons stopped at the crossing of two lanes and nobody turned left or right. Nan stood in the mud and pressed her palm flat over the place where the red of her mother's ribbon met the black of the road. "Here," she said. "This is where we go home." They went home that spring, and the old pony pulled the last wagon through the gate without being asked.
