Diary, Tuesday. The rain came at four, the first since March, and the whole of Keel Junction ran out into the road to stand in it like fools. Mr Asante from the petrol station had his arms wide. The motel children were catching it on their tongues. I stayed behind the counter with my twenty elephant sheets pinned along the back wall, because that is what I am paid for, and because at sixty-one I do not run into weather.

Then the lorry driver Dennis Holt came in dripping, asking whether I had anything with a brolly. His daughter leaves for the coast on Friday and wants something to remember the road by. I showed him the small grey one in the third row, the elephant with its trunk raised and an umbrella balanced on its back like a parasol at a garden party. He laughed so hard he had to sit on the stool by the kettle. He said that was her exactly, a girl who packed an umbrella for a drought.

I gave him a photocopy and a pencil for the outline, and he paid in coins that smelled of diesel. At the door he looked up at the sky, still the colour of wet slate, and asked whether I thought it would last. I told him the desert has never once in my life kept a promise, and that he should take the umbrella anyway.

After he left I unpinned the umbrella elephant and carried it out to the step, where the first drops had already darkened the dust into small coins. I held it up to the rain and watched the black lines hold.
