Geometric animal flash sheet
Geometric · Black and grey · Flash
The sheet shows six animals drawn as faceted, low-poly outlines: a rearing horse, an elephant, a giraffe, a heavy-set animal that resembles a hippopotamus, a rhinoceros and a camel. The lines are thin, dark and evenly weighted, with triangular facets forming each body. The animals are spread across a plain white background with no colour or shading.

The lift in Ashdown House had been dead since Easter, so the boy and I took the stairs to the fourteenth floor with a sheet of paper rolled under my arm. Kofi was nine and had decided animals were the only thing worth drawing, but the ones in his library books had soft faces and fur he could not manage. I told him a thing you could not hold could still be built out of triangles. He didn't believe me until he saw it.

We spread the sheet on the landing ledge under the window, where the light came in flat and grey off the car park. He went first with the giraffe, because a giraffe is only a long neck and a stubborn idea, and the lines came out sharp as fence wire. The elephant took him an afternoon. He kept rubbing out its ear until I told him the ear was the best bit, a fan of little shards that looked ready to catch the wind off the estate. The camel looked like a tent somebody had kicked. He said that was how camels looked from the bottom of the stairs.
On the Thursday the sheet went missing. Mr Bell said the cleaners had binned rubbish from the ledge, and Kofi stood there with his jaw working until I thought he might cry. Then he went home and came back with the horse, redrawn from memory, rearing up on its back legs with every facet picked out in dark pen. He had got the hooves right. Nobody had shown him how.
The lift came back on the Monday. We rode it up together, the doors sliding shut on the two of us, and he held the horse against his chest the way you hold something you intend to keep. On the way down he showed me that the horse's legs were the only lines in the whole drawing that did not touch.
