The bass drum arrived on the back of Huw Pritchard's flatbed in the second week of December, two days before a thaw that never came, and Dilys Vaughan signed for it because nobody else was up at the yard to sign. The drummer came with it. He was called Morgan, which was wrong for a boy with hair like a burst cushion, and he climbed out of the cab already drumming on the tailgate with both hands.

The hens left the coop in a body. Eleven ewes that had stood hunched in the lee of the hay barn since Boxing Day lifted their heads as if someone had called their names. Morgan hit the drum with his whole shoulder, cheeks puffed, eyes bulging as though the beat were trying to escape through them, and the cold seemed to slide off the yard like a dog getting out of a bath.

She told him to stop. He didn't, not at first, and when he finally did, the silence was so large she could hear the beck grinding under the ice. Then old Mrs Jenkins's speckled hen, the one that never laid, started up a clucking that matched the last beat, and Dilys found herself tapping a fence post with a spanner.

He came back every night after that, rain or frost, his nose glowing red in the lamplight, and every morning the drum skin was a little more torn and the feed bins a little more dented. In January the ewe that had been dying in the barn got to her feet for him. Dilys patched the skin with a feed sack and a bootlace, and kept the kettle on for a man who had never once asked for a cup of tea.
