Colour tattoo of the Muppet character Animal with wild red hair, wide mouth and bandana, shaded in a painterly style on the upper arm.

Animal from the Muppets on the upper arm

Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A large colour tattoo of the Muppet character Animal, showing wild red and orange fur, a bulging red nose, wide white eyes and an open mouth with a red tongue and teeth. He wears a black bandana on one wrist and a chain hangs at his side, set against a soft purple wash. Smooth shading and highlights give the cartoon figure volume, and the design fills most of the frame against plain skin.

You are hired to sit behind the drums at the Palais in Hollowmere because the last drummer walked out halfway through the Saturday waltz and nobody else in town would take the stool. The hall smells of wet wool coats and Brylcreem. Mr Fenwick, the bandleader, gives you the rules with his hat still on: keep time, leave the cymbals alone on the slow numbers, and whatever happens, keep that length of chain well away from the bass drum.

The replacement arrives at nine, though he is not much like a man. He has wild red fur that stands up in tufts, eyes like boiled eggs, and a black bandana knotted round one wrist. The chain swings from his hip with every step. He takes your sticks before you can offer them, plays a fill that rattles the glass lamps, and when the couples stop dancing to stare, he throws back his head and laughs with his whole open mouth, tongue and all.

By midnight the floor is empty and the brass section has gone home in a huff. Fenwick counts the takings in the cloakroom. You sit on an upturned crate, sweating through your shirt, while the drummer lies stretched across the stage in the purple wash of the footlights. He taps out a slow waltz on the boards with one orange hand, and you find yourself counting along. He stops, squints at you, and pushes the sticks back into your palm. You kept up, he says, which is more than the last one did. Then he rolls off the edge of the stage and the chain clinks away into the dark.
