Cheshire Cat tattoo on the lower back
Back · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows the grinning Cheshire Cat lying along the skin, with a striped pink and purple body, a long curled tail and a wide toothy smile. The outlines are bold and the fills are flat with soft white highlights, giving the cat a cartoon finish. It sits on the side of the lower back above a pink waistband, with the tail curling across the lower edge of the design.

The cat was already sprawled across the coal hatch when you came up from the cabin, grinning the way he always did just before he took something. The Marigold was tied up below Hobday's lock, the water flat and brown under a sky the colour of old pewter, and the cat's stripes had gone a shade too bright in the low sun, pink and plum like a bolt of ribbon somebody had left out in the rain. "Morning," he said, though he had no business saying anything. "You've left the lock key in the gate again, and Mr Hobday has been looking at you very hard from his window."

You told him the key was none of his concern. He agreed that it wasn't, then slid off the hatch and strolled along the gunwale, tail curling behind him like a question mark nobody had asked. When you reached for the brass watch your grandfather had left on the tiller, he was simply not there any more. Only the grin hung over the water for a moment, wide and toothy, before it thinned into the mist and was gone.
You spent the day poling the barge through three locks and most of your temper. By dusk the mist had lifted and the watch was back on its hook, ticking as though it had never been stolen. Then you saw the tail, still curled neatly across the tiller, warm to the touch and faintly ticklish, as if it were waiting to be told where to go next. You tied it to the mooring ring, and it stayed, and in the morning the gate of Hobday's lock had a grin painted on it in pink and plum, which Hobday swore he had never done.
