The artwork sits across the shoulder and upper back on bare skin, with the two characters arranged diagonally against a plain background.

Bramble Farm had been quiet for three weeks, which Scruffington took as a sign that something was about to go wrong. He sat on the back step in the frost, ears flat, watching the lane for the dark car that had brought the last trouble. Behind him the kitchen light made a yellow square on the snow, and inside Mrs Pennock was singing along to the radio, off key, the way she always did when she thought nobody could hear.

The trouble arrived at a quarter past four, not in a car but over the top of the orchard wall. It was tall and green in the face, with a purple nose that went before it like a bow prow, and it was carrying a hurricane lamp and a sack of turnips it had clearly stolen. Its eyes were ringed in orange, bright as the lamp, and when it grinned the grin went on for longer than seemed possible. "Evening, Scruff," it said, in a voice like a drain. "Your mistress said you would show me to the henhouse."

Scruffington had never been asked to show anyone anywhere in his life. He backed up the step, tail clamped, and tried to bark, but what came out was a squeak that sounded like a hinge. The thing laughed, and the laugh rattled the windows of the barn.

Then the back door opened and Mrs Pennock stood there in her dressing gown, holding a mug of cocoa and a wooden spoon. "Harold," she said, "you're early, and you've brought vegetables again." The thing sagged. Scruffington realised he had been frightened of a man in a borrowed face and a bad coat, and that the turnips were, in fact, for supper. He went to sleep by the Aga that night with his nose tucked under his tail, feeling foolish.
