Before you sign off the Monday returns, you need to look at box fourteen. Somebody left a fur suit on the 6.42 to Crewe, blue as a bruise, with two googly eyes the size of teacups sewn to the top. Nobody has claimed it. Ticket inspector Dev swears the passenger was a man in a grey mac who sat with his knees together and hummed something that seemed to be mostly about biscuits.

I tried it on, before you start. Don't laugh. The inside smells of crumbs and somebody's aftershave, and the mouth is a black cave I could fit a clipboard into. I stood at the window of the office and waved at the 4.15 like a fool, and a little girl on the platform waved back, so that is something.

Here is the odd part. Last Thursday a woman in a green coat came in asking after a cardigan. She described it as fluffy and ridiculous, and when I asked what colour, she said blue, then went quiet and looked at the suit on the hook. Her father used to wear it at the Christmas fete in Stockport, she said, and he stopped going the year the fete stopped. She didn't cry. She just asked whether we might keep it a while longer, in case.

So I have. It's on the top shelf behind the spare umbrellas. Box fourteen is still open, and I haven't signed the form.
