A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The generator coughed twice behind the dodgems and then settled, and Nell Pardoe stood in the wet grass with a red bag over her shoulder, counting the parcels inside for the third time. Six loaves, a jar of pickled onions, and a letter sealed with green wax for Mrs Ashdown at the caravan past the hedge. Her uncle had said the fair would be packed up by dusk. He had also said the cat would stay in the van.

The cat had other ideas. It sat on the broom where Nell had leaned it against the candy floss trailer, black as a boot, tail hooked over the bristles as if it had paid for the ride. When she reached for the handle it did not move. Everyone on the site knew you did not argue with a cat that had already decided where it was going, so Nell sat down on the trailer step and waited, the way the lads on the waltzers waited when a ride stalled.

Mrs Ashdown's caravan was a quarter mile across the stubble. Nell pushed the broom, walked beside it, then gave up and swung a leg over. The wood was warm from the afternoon sun. The cat settled behind her with a sigh, the bag bumped against her hip, and for one long stretch of hedgerow the fair's music fell away behind them until there was only the hiss of bristles through the grass.

Mrs Ashdown was waiting on her step with a tin of biscuits, which she opened before she read the letter. She looked at the broom, then at the cat, and said, 'Well, you've brought the post in style.' Nell handed over the bag. Mrs Ashdown read the letter twice, folded it into her apron, and told her to take the cat home and tell her uncle the fare had been paid in onions.
