Cartoon character in a hat on upper arm

Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A cartoon character with long black hair, pale blue-grey skin and a wide yellow and orange hat plays a bass guitar, wearing a red top and dark skirt. Bold black outlines define the figure, with flat, solid fills of colour and no shading. The design is centred on the upper arm and fills most of the visible skin.

Sit down, the bread's not out yet, so you've time for this. My grandmother baked for the whole of Mallow Lane, and she used to say the night before the first loaf is the only honest hour a town has. That's when the ghost came in.

She arrived through the back door, which was locked, so nobody ever worked out how. Pale as skimmed milk, hair down her back like spilt ink, and a wide yellow hat with a blue band that kept the rain off nothing. She had a bass guitar slung over her shoulder, the body painted red, and she asked my grandmother for a bag of flour and a song in return. My grandmother said the flour was a penny. The song was free, because she was not in the business of charging for music, only for bread.

So the woman played. Four low notes that went down into the ovens and came up through the floor, rattling the tins. Every loaf that had risen in the proving cupboard rose a little higher, as if it had heard something it wanted to be part of. The baker's boy, who was clumsy with everything, stopped dropping trays.

When the dawn bell rang at the chapel, she was gone, and so was the penny, which she had paid, I'm told, in a coin nobody in the lane had seen before. My grandmother never sold a loaf that wasn't perfect again. And if you're waiting for the moral, there isn't one. There's only the bread, and it's out now, so mind the heat.
