Beauty and the Beast scene in a stained glass frame

Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A colour tattoo on the outer thigh shows two figures dancing inside an ornate oval frame with gold scrollwork at the top. The figures sit within a stained glass style panel in green, blue and pink, and a banner at the bottom reads tale as old as time. Bold black outlines define the linework, with soft shading on the dress and the leaves, which are placed around the lower edge of the frame.

Pull that chair in closer, love, and mind the bucket, it's been dripping since the Tuesday flood and the estates lot won't come up until morning. Right. Where was I? Ah yes, the glazier.

Her name was Ada Tully and she had hands like pliers, which is what you need for cutting lead came. St Brannock's wanted a new window for the chapel after the winter the bell cracked, and the vicar, a sad long man called Pryce, asked for two people dancing in it. He'd lost his wife to the cold that January and thought the parish needed something to look at besides the dead.

Ada cut them from scraps. A yellow skirt from a bolt of silk her sister posted from Leeds, a grey coat from a tailor's offcut. She set them in an oval gilt frame she'd bought from a junk shop, because the frame was the only thing in the shop that would hold still. Every evening she carried the panel out to the yard and held it to the last light, and every evening the two figures had turned a little further toward each other, though she had not touched the lead since Sunday.

On the night it was finished, Pryce found the church empty and the window propped against the font. Down in the corner, where the lead met the gilt, she had scratched a line of her own: same tune, same floor, and the lamp left burning. Pryce says he still hears the bell on quiet nights, a little flat, and that the two in the window are holding hands now. I don't know if that's true. Mind the bucket, love. It's the only thing on this ward keeping time.
