Two small black fine line pine tree tattoos on the side of a foot, close to the ankle.

Two pine trees on a foot

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a foot showing two small pine trees tattooed in black ink, one taller than the other. The lines are thin and slightly sketchy, with short strokes forming the branches and no shading. The skin tone is warm and the background is dark, which keeps the focus on the tattoo.

Nobody told me the generator would give out the night before the Lincolnshire fair opened, so when Dessie Carrow pitched his bunk in the back of the caravan I was already on my knees in the wet grass, feeling for the fuse with a torch in my teeth. The field stank of diesel and cut turf. Beyond the rides the land ran flat to a line of black firs that Dessie swore had been planted by a man who hated fairgrounds.

By dawn the lights were on and the Waltzer had its brass plate polished. Dessie's granddaughter, Ruthie, who was nine and had come along for the summer because her mother was in hospital in Boston, sat on the step of the ghost train with a pencil and a sheet of paper from the ticket office. She was drawing the firs. She drew them tall and thin, with short strokes falling off each side like rain, and then she drew a small one beside the big one, because, she said, the small one had to be there so the big one didn't feel bossy.

Dessie laughed until he coughed. Then he told me about the summer his own father lost the big top to a storm on the coast road, and how they camped under those same firs for three weeks with nothing but a tarp and a tin of peaches, waiting for the lorry to be towed out of the ditch.

On the last night, Ruthie asked me to hold the paper while she crawled under the ghost train to find a ticket she'd dropped. I held it up to the work light. Two pines, sketched in quick dark strokes, the smaller one leaning a little towards the larger. The pencil had pressed hard at the base, as if someone had meant to stay.
