Arrow tattoo on forearm holding keys
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A hand grips several leather key straps in pink, tan and lilac, with two keys hanging from metal rings. A black-ink arrow with an open triangular head runs diagonally along the inner forearm, with a thin silver bangle worn above it. The linework is fine and the tattoo is shown in greys against a plain pale wall.

The messenger had ridden three days with a sealed box that rattled, and when he reached the north gate of Ysolde he found it barred from inside and the keeper on the wall with a bow across her knees. She was not looking at him. She was turning a ring of keys over her thumb, two of them bright brass and one small and grey, and every so often she tugged the leather straps that held them, tan, rose and lilac, as if checking they were still there.

"The box is for the Warden," he called up. "The king's seal is on it."
"Then the Warden will want the key, and the key is in my pocket, and my pocket is in Ysolde, and Ysolde is shut until the spring thaw." She nocked an arrow whose head was cut into an open triangle, so the wind whistled through it. "Stand back from the wall."
He stood back. She loosed the arrow high over the gate, and it came down on the far side of the stones with a clatter. Then a second arrow, trailing a leather strap, went through the gap between the battlements and dropped on the cobbles at his feet. Tied to its shaft was a single brass key, warm from her hand. He turned it in the lock of the box, and the lid sprang open on a letter in the king's own hand: bring this to the one who kept the gate. He looked up, but she was already gone from the wall, and the rain had begun again, and the bow lay where she had left it.
