Harold's rhubarb is in the bed by the shed, fat as a child's arm, and this morning the mountains came out so sharp from the kitchen step that I could count the notches along the ridge. I wrote the names of the peaks on the back of the seed packets the way Eli used to, though I never could tell Lafayette from Liberty when the cloud sat on them.

Eli rang on Sunday from the payphone outside the station in Boston, the same 603 number he has been dialling since he was eleven and wanted to be heard above the cows. He said the city is loud enough to drown a man's thoughts. I told him the lupins he sent me from Bethlehem have come up in the corner where the frost lingers longest, and that they are blue as a cold morning. He said he would come up in October. He said that in August too.

This afternoon I walked down to the gate with a trowel in one hand and the spare key in the other, though nobody has locked anything here since 1962. The ridge was clear all the way to the notch. I stood there long enough for the shadows to crawl across the lupins, then went back up the path and planted the last of his seeds in a straight line along the wall, where they will need to be watered in the morning and every morning after.
