A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nell had been picking Discovery apples since six, and by four her fingers were sticky with windfall sugar. Across the valley the surveyor stood on the rise with his theodolite, squinting at the ridge. He had come in August asking permission to set a brass pin in the orchard wall, and her mother had agreed only because he offered to pay in cider.

Nell watched him lower his eye to the sight and move his lips as he counted. He wrote in a notebook with a pencil he kept sharpening with a penknife. "Three peaks," he said when he came down for water, "but only if you stand on the stile. From the lane they're two." She asked how he knew. He said hills lie about their height until you take the angle from more than one place, and that a triangle drawn from two points was the only honest way to tell a mountain from a hump.

That evening she climbed the stile with a pencil of her own. The three peaks sat in a row above the trees, the middle one darker where the slope fell into shadow. She drew them as triangles, then hatched the inner faces with quick strokes, the way he had shown her, so the shadow would look like it had weight.

Next morning the tripod was gone. On the orchard wall the brass pin glinted where he had set it, and beside it someone had written in very small pencil the height of the middle peak in feet. Nell read it twice, then went back to the apples, counting the ones she would keep.
