The droid came off the lorry on Tuesday with its dome cracked and one leg held on by a bootlace. Mr Okonedo at the scrapyard wanted fifteen pounds for the lot, and I paid him in the end because the old fellow kept saying it had been waiting for someone to notice it. I have spent three nights with a tin of black enamel and Gran's quilt book open on the workbench, copying the diamonds and zigzags onto its barrel body one stripe at a time, until the whole thing looked stitched rather than painted.

Mum says it cannot come to the wedding. Mum is wrong. Dad's cousin Pete has already promised to carry the ring cushion on the droid's back, and the vicar agreed on condition it does not beep during the vows. I told him it only beeps when someone is about to cry, which is a lie, but a useful one.

On the morning, the cobbles outside St Hilda's were wet and the droid would not go straight. Its left foot kept catching in the gutter, and I was ready to carry it, but Rosie walked over and turned the wheel with her own hand, the way Gran used to turn a loom. It rolled up the path in a gentle curve, and at the door it stopped, dome tilted toward the bride, and gave one low chirp.

Nobody in the church had a word for that. I did. It was the sound Gran made when a pattern finally came right.
