Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small tattoo of a standing cartoon figure wearing a cap and shorts, with one hand raised near the face. The figure is drawn in thin black outline with no shading, and the design sits on the inside of the wrist. The skin is a warm tone, and a hand, a ring and a wristwatch are visible in the frame.

The orchard at Pennick Hill had gone to wasps by the last week of August, and Mr Rudd still wanted the windfalls gathered before the cider man came on Friday. I was nine that summer and owned one cap, a red one with a peak bent into the shape of a duck's bill, and I wore it for everything, including the stepladder.

'Sixpence a sack,' Mr Rudd said, not looking up from his pipe. 'And if you eat more than you pick, the wasps will tell me.' I stood in the rows with my hand cupped to my mouth, the way Dad did when he wanted the whole valley to hear him, and shouted for Bet Ansell. She had been promising me a go on her bicycle since Easter and had never once let me touch the handlebars.
She came up the lane with a basket on each arm and a grin I did not trust. 'Race you to the Bramley,' she said. 'Winner takes the cap.' I should have said no. The Bramley was the tallest tree on the hill, and I had never got past its second fork. She went up like a squirrel with a grudge, and I went up three rungs of my own nerve, then came down quicker than I went up, with a bruise on my shin and no cap on my head.
By dusk Bet had the cap, I had a sack of bruised apples and a sixpence that Mr Rudd docked for the one I'd eaten, and the bicycle, I found out later, belonged to her brother and had never been hers to promise. I still think about that cap riding off on the back of it, the peak pointing into the wind, as if it had somewhere important to be.
