World map outline on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A small outline tattoo of the world map sits on the side of a foot near the ankle. The continents are drawn in a single dark, thin line with no shading or fill. The skin is pale and the background is a blue fabric, and a multicoloured woven bracelet is worn above the tattoo.

The wagon of the Marrow Brothers Circus had sat on bricks in Scarrow Field since the winter the elephant died, and nobody had pulled the tarpaulin off the cart of maps since. Old Tobiah Quill kept them there. His granddaughter Wren came up from the coast in March with a tin of ink and a bad cold. She found him asleep in the wagon with his boots on. 'Nobody will come to the ring now,' she said. 'Then we'll go to where they are,' he said, not waking properly. It was what he said whenever the money had gone.
They sold the horses to a farm near Hallam and kept the caravan. In the mornings Wren walked the map with her finger, from the small hook of the northern lands down across the dry middle, round the cold lip of the south, and up into the empty blue. She learned the shape of every coast by heart. The old man could no longer read the town names, so she read them aloud, and he corrected her pronunciation of places he had never visited, because he had only ever seen them on paper.
On the last night of the season they hung the map over the ring in the empty field and lit the lamps. Tobiah stepped onto the sawdust and said the Marrow Brothers had played every continent on the wall but one, and that one was the place they had always meant to go. Wren asked which. He tapped the paper where the pen line ran off the edge, and she understood for the first time that the drawing had never been finished, only left for the next pair of hands.
