Fine line world map on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a thin, pale outline of the world map tattooed across the wrist, showing the continents of the Americas, Africa, Europe and Asia. The linework is fine and even, and the ink appears light or white against the skin, so the design reads as a subtle outline rather than solid shading. The map fills the width of the wrist, with the background showing a grey surface and a patterned fabric at the left edge.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The surveyor came over the pass in the week the snow began to thaw, carrying a roll of goatskin and a pot of white clay, and asked the shepherd's widow at Coldmere if he might sleep by her fire. She let him, because the pass had taken two of her sons and she had no more use for doors that stayed shut. Each morning he sat at her table and drew the world as he had walked it: the long coast of the west, the green sea that came in at the mouths of rivers, the great dry shelf where the sun baked the men who carried salt.

He drew with a bone stylus dipped in the clay, and the lines were so fine that she could not see them until she tilted the skin to the window. She asked him why he bothered with lines nobody could read. He said every coast was an edge where one thing stopped and another began, and a map was only a list of those edges. She thought that a sorry way to live, always tracing where things ended, but she kept the skin when he went on his way.

He did not come back for it. In the spring the pass ran with meltwater, and a boy herding goats found the roll wedged under a rock below the cairn, the clay gone soft and grey. His mother scrubbed it with wet ash until the outlines showed again, paler than the goatskin, and nailed it above the door where the draught could reach it. Visitors asked what the lines were, and she told them they were the parts of the world nobody had walked yet.

Every winter, when the snow comes down thick, the shepherds of Coldmere still climb to the pass and look for the coastlines under it. They say whatever the snow keeps white is the country nobody has crossed.
