World map outline on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A single-line outline of the continents of the world sits on the side of a foot near the ankle. The linework is thin and even, drawn in dark ink with no shading, and the outlines of Europe, Africa, the Americas and Asia are easy to follow. The foot rests on a blue denim surface, and a woven bracelet in yellow, green and blue sits above the ankle.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The king of Ostrevel wanted the world on one page, and he wanted it drawn without a single lifted nib. You were the only cartographer at court who could manage it, so you sat for nine nights at the long table in the tower, ink drying on your knuckles, while the candle burned down to a stub each evening and the scullery boy kept bringing fresh ones without being asked.

The trouble was the coastlines. Every shore you drew curled back on itself, and the pen wanted to bridge the gaps between the lands, to run a thin line from the western headlands across open water to the sprawl of the southern continent, which is how you knew the map was lying. You tried it the honest way at first, lifting the nib at every harbour, and the king's clerks sent it back with a note that said only: continuous.

On the tenth night you stopped trying to be clever. You let the line run along the shore of the great grey sea, past the notched peninsula and the long bulge of the desert coast, down the spine of the sun-warm land to its tip, then up again along the western edge of the world where the sea turned blue on the page. The line never left the paper. It was only when you looked up that you saw the room had gone very quiet, and the boy had set down the candle to watch.

The king pressed his thumb to the wet ink, smudging the harbour of Tarn, and declared the map true because it could not be undone. He paid you in salt and silver. Years later, when the tower fell and the court scattered, you kept the one sheet folded inside your coat, and you still trace its outline with a finger whenever you need to remember where you started.
