Autobot emblem with roses on a thigh

Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows the Autobot insignia from the Transformers franchise, filled with red roses, green leaves and a blue sky with purple clouds. Bold black outlines define the shapes, and the shading is soft and blended within each section. Colour ink dominates the design, which is centred on the upper leg and shown in close view against a plain background, with another tattoo partly visible at the bottom edge.

Sit down, love, the kettle's not boiled yet and the corridor will keep till you've heard it. You see that badge on the lad's bag in bay four? Blue and purple, like a bruise going off. My husband had one like it on the dashboard of a Bedford van in 1979, and I'll tell you what it was for.

The van belonged to Dorothy Quayle, who ran a flower stall on Tanner Street. Every Thursday she drove up the hill with roses for the wards, red ones mostly, packed in damp newspaper. Someone had painted a chevron on the bonnet, a shield with a stripe down its middle, and the kids on the estate swore it was a robot. Dorothy said it was a shield for keeping the frost off the buds, and she'd clip you round the ear if you laughed.

The night the generator failed, the lifts stopped and the corridors went black except for torches. Maureen Shaw was on her own with a boy who couldn't stop shaking. Around three in the morning the van came round the back by the bins, lights off, and Dorothy sat on the step with the radio tuned low to the shipping forecast. She read the sea areas out slowly, Dogger, Fisher, German Bight, like a lullaby. The boy fell asleep somewhere around Forties. The power came back at five.

Next morning the badge had gone from the bonnet. Dorothy said it had gone off to keep watch somewhere else, and she never explained further. Maybe it did. Mind the lift on your way out, love. It still sulks after dark.
