Autumn lakeside jetty on a calf

Realism · Calf · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows a lakeside scene with a wooden jetty running towards the water, flanked by weathered posts. Orange and red autumn trees sit along the far shore beneath blue hills, with their reflections in the water. The shading is soft and painterly, with smooth colour blends across the sky, water and foliage, and the scene is centred on the leg.

Sit down, sit down, you'll not hear me over that kettle. No, leave the lid be. The last boat to tie up at Harlow's jetty that October was my uncle Tom's, and he came in without his hat, which should have told us something.

The lake up there is shallow at the near end and cold as a cellar at the far. In autumn the oaks along the eastern shore turn the colour of a fox that's been running, and their reflections sit on the water so the whole lake goes orange, as if somebody poured the sunset in and forgot to stir. Tom said that was the only honest thing about the place.

He'd been paid to carry a crate of glass lamps across to the hill farms, and the widow Pryce at the far end had promised him a sack of apples if he brought the crate up the planks himself. Halfway along, one of the grey posts gave under his boot. He stood there with the water hushing below and the crate on his shoulder, thinking about nothing but his feet and the blue hills behind him.

Here's the thing about a jetty, Tom used to say. It never goes anywhere you can't see from the start. He set the crate down on the boards, counted the posts, and walked back the way he'd come with every lamp still in it. Pryce waited on the bank till dusk. The apples went to the pigs.

He never did tell us what he'd seen out there. Only that the leaves on the far shore kept dropping into their own reflections, and that from the end of the planks you couldn't tell which orange was the sky.
