Dear Tobias, you will laugh at me for writing on paper when the post barge comes only once a month, but ink keeps better than my memory of your face. The harvest is in. The sun now goes down in the gap between Grey Tor and the Sallow Ridges, and for a quarter hour each evening the whole of Hollin Water turns the colour of a marmalade jar held up to a candle. Mother's old rule still holds: nobody rakes the leaves until the sun has gone under the hills, or the lake will sulk.

The maples were the Queen's gift, you remember, sent over the mountains in crates the year the old treaty was signed. Nobody thought they would take. The first two winters the saplings stood along the shore like wet brooms. Then Aunt Maud started tying red ribbon round the trunks and singing to them at dusk, and the autumn after, the Shore Road burned gold from end to end. Whether it was the ribbon or the singing I cannot say, but the village has never let her forget it.

Last week the sun dropped behind the ridges just as the wind lifted the leaves off the water, and for a moment the lake held the hills upside down, blue and orange, with the leaves drifting across it like spilt coins. I stood on the jetty with an empty bucket and forgot what I had come for. I am sending you one of those leaves, pressed flat in this envelope, so you can tell me whether the Bridgeport orchards have anything so foolish to show you.
