Lakeside landscape with two figures on a leg

Calf · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows a pastoral scene with green mountains beyond a calm lake under a yellow sky, with a large tree on the right and two dark silhouetted figures seated near the water. The foreground has grassy meadow, leafy shrubs, pink flowers and yellow accents. Soft colour shading and bold dark outlines give it an illustrative look, and the scene wraps around the leg in an oval composition.

The tree had been a sapling the summer the valley flooded, and by the time Walter Pryce admitted his knees would no longer take the path down to the shore, it had grown wide enough to shade the bench where he and his brother had argued about everything since 1952.

Dai never came to the bench any more. He sent his grandson with a tin of tea and a folded copy of the Western Mail, and the boy would stand on the stones trying to skim them while the two old men pretended not to watch each other. The mountains across the water went from green to bruise to grey through the afternoon, and Walter learned to tell the hour by the yellow that slid off the top ridge and onto the lake.

On the last Thursday in October the boy came alone. He said his grandfather had gone to the hospital in Bala and had left a message, which was that the lake was too cold for swimming and the trout had been stupid all year. Walter laughed until he coughed. Then he noticed the boy was holding a second tin, and inside it, wrapped in a handkerchief, was the brass compass Dai had carried since national service.

They sat until the light had gone off the meadow. Walter pointed the compass at the ridge, then at the tree, then at the empty stretch of bank where the old path ran, and told the boy which way was home. It was the one thing either of them had ever been sure of, and it was enough to get a boy back up the hill in the dark.
