Avengers logo with shield and arrow

Other · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows a large grey, outlined letter A from the Avengers logo, with a red and white Captain America shield, a green and yellow inner ring, a dark ring with light blue segments, a Hawkeye arrow and a partial Loki helmet horn at the top. The linework is bold and solid, with simple flat fills and light shading on the metallic parts. The design fills most of the frame against blurred white flowers.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The shooting gallery on Brackham pier had not been painted since the summer of 1977, so when Dilys Crane pulled the tarpaulin back that November, the targets looked like they had been waiting for someone to get them wrong. The red rings had faded to pink. The centre target was a white shield with a star the old man had painted on by hand, and somebody had pinned a tin letter A above the counter for a prize nobody had won in years.

Her nephew Owen, nine and furious about being sent indoors, borrowed the rifle and missed everything. Then he took a bent arrow from the rack, its fletching still red, and loosed it straight into the green and yellow ring of the centre target. The ring rattled. A dark hoop behind it, studded with little blue bulbs that still lit when you plugged them in, began to hum like a kettle.

Dilys had worked the gallery for thirty years and knew the rule her late husband had written on the back wall in grease pencil: a prize goes to whoever is willing to carry it home. Owen lifted the tin A from its hook. It weighed more than it should. On the top shelf the old horned helmet from the carnival days, which nobody had dusted since the fair closed, seemed to turn a little towards the door.

They walked the pier to the car park with the letter between them, and the wind off the Channel pushed at it like a crowd wanting in. Owen wanted to know who had painted the shield. Dilys told him it was whoever had wanted the gallery to look as if it were guarding something. She did not say what. At the gate she let him keep the arrow, and he carried it like a sword all the way home.
