Colour tattoo of a red circular emblem with a black outline and a red angular symbol inside, on the calf.

Red circular emblem on a calf

Calf · Colour · Photo

A bold red emblem sits inside a black outline, with a red angular symbol inside a circle forming the central motif. The flat red fill has darker red shading along the edges and a few subtle highlights, and the thick black outline gives it a crisp, graphic finish. The design is centred on the lower leg against plain skin with a grey plastic backdrop and a dark shoe at the lower right.

Third coat on the quarry gate and the red still won't sit flat on the iron. The oxblood wants to pool in the rivets, so I keep going back with the badger brush, pulling it thin from the edges in. Inspector Hale wants the black outline heavier this year, so drivers coming down the cutting in the dark can read it from the bend. He says the old sign faded to nothing, which is true, though nobody in Calder Row ever needed telling where the ground had gone soft.

The men at the Crown call the shape the hook, because the red bar folds back on itself inside the ring like a shepherd's crook somebody has bent over a knee. My father painted the first one in 1958 and signed the lower corner with his initials and the year, small enough that you'd miss it unless you were looking. I have never once looked anywhere else on that gate. This morning, Nell Garside from the end terrace stood on the verge with her satchel and asked me what it meant. I told her it meant keep back from the edge. She said her dad had worked the face for twenty years and he never kept back from anything, and then she walked off to catch the bus before I could think of a reply.

So I laid the red on heavier along the bend where the paint had gone thin, and I let the outline run a little wide on the left, the side the wind hits. It isn't the sign Hale ordered. It looks more like something a child would draw if she had been told the rules and decided to keep one of them for herself.

Rain came in at four and kept on until the tins were full of it. By morning the red had run off the lower bar and down into the gutter in a long, bright stripe, and the puddle at the foot of the gate was the exact shade of the crook. I left it there. The council can send someone to scrub the street if they want a clean sign, and I wrote the date in the corner the way my father did, small enough to miss.
