Iron Man with glowing repulsor hand on a calf

Realism · Calf · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows the Iron Man superhero helmet and upper body, with one armoured hand reaching towards the viewer and a glowing white repulsor at the centre of the palm. The shading is smooth and painterly, with bright highlights on the red and gold plating and soft blended edges. Red, gold, blue and purple ink dominate the composition, which is framed against the curve of the leg.

Right, sit closer, the wind's only halfway through its moaning. My grandfather kept the light on Carrick Teg before the automatic lamp came, and he swore to me that the sea once gave him a visitor. It was a grey October morning, the swell running high enough to take the gulls off the rocks, and he saw something glinting in the kelp below the landing steps. He went down with the boathook expecting a lobster pot. What he found was a man-sized suit of armour, dented red and buttery gold, with a face plate shut tight and not a single rivet of it rusted.

He dragged it up the steps, which he said was the hardest work of his life, and he sat it against the lamp room wall while the kettle boiled. Twice in the night it hummed. Twice he went up the spiral stair with his heart in his mouth, and both times the helmet was turned towards the lamp, as if it were drinking the light. Then, a little before the dawn watch, the right gauntlet lifted and opened its palm, and a white glow gathered in the middle of it, round and steady as a second moon.

He never told the coastguard. He said the thing had only wanted one favour: to be shown how the lamp was lit. So he pulled the cord on the old wick for it, and the suit stood in the gallery with its hand held out to the bay, pulsing back at the ships. In the morning it was gone, the steps wet and empty. The only trace was a red palm print scorched into the glass, which I'll show you on Sunday if the weather allows.
