Avocado halves on the ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A small tattoo of two avocado halves sits on a pale leg against a mint green background. The left half is shaded with dense dotwork stippling, while the right half is drawn as a clean outline with a stippled pit. The black ink is delicate and the composition is centred on the lower leg.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mabel Crane split an avocado on the scrubbed board before the bakers' bell, the way her grandmother had split everything, with the knife turned to find the stone and no more. The halves came apart cleanly. She set the dark one by the proving drawers, where the skin had bruised, and kept the pale one open on the board with its stone sitting in it like a coin in a purse.

The carter's boy came for the loaves at first light and asked why she had two halves and no bread. She told him the fruit had come up from the boat at Hull with its heart already split, and that a split thing is only waiting for its other side. He laughed and took the rye. She did not laugh. She had been waiting for that other side since the spring, and the kitchen smelled of yeast and nothing else.

Each morning after, she laid the halves on the sill, cut faces to the glass. The pale one went a little greener each day while the dark one held its colour. Her neighbour told her to throw them out. Mabel wrapped the stones in muslin and kept them in the flour bin instead, in case they were wanted.

By the first frost the carter's boy came back for his bread and stood in the doorway with his hands in his pockets. Mabel took the pale half from the sill, stone and all, and pressed it into his palm. The dark one she kept for herself. They ate standing up, the two of them, with the door open to the cold.
